Airport Wi-Fi is one of the worst environments for eSIM installation. Here's why and what to do.

The three problems

  1. Captive portals — you must log in through a browser page before any real traffic passes. Many travelers try to install the eSIM before completing this step.
  2. Time-limited access — free tiers often expire in 30–60 minutes, exactly when your install is still finishing.
  3. Deep packet inspection — airports contract network security appliances that flag "unusual" HTTPS traffic like SM-DP+ handshakes as potentially malicious.

What to do at the airport

  • Open Safari or Chrome first, load any site (like example.com), and complete the captive-portal login fully.
  • Skip the free "video ad to unlock 60 min" flow — it often puts you on a filtered subnet.
  • If your install fails, tether from a friend's phone or use your own primary mobile data if it still has coverage.
  • If neither is available, wait until you reach your hotel or Airbnb — most private Wi-Fi is friendlier.

The prevention

Install your Openline eSIM before you leave home on your own broadband. The profile sits dormant and activates automatically when you land. This is the single most reliable install path.

Every Openline plan is delivered as a purchase code (format OL-4F7X-9K2Q-A3M8). You can redeem it in three ways: (1) inside the Openline app, (2) signed into your account at openline.com, or (3) anonymously at openline.com/start with just the code — no account needed.

Still stuck?

Reach Openline support 24/7 through any of these channels:

When you write in, include your purchase code (the OL-… code we emailed you) and, if the eSIM is already installed, its ICCID (Settings → Cellular → tap the Openline line). That's enough for us to find your plan and diagnose without back-and-forth.
