Every Openline plan is delivered as a purchase code — a bearer instrument, like a gift card. Anyone who holds an unredeemed code can turn it into a working eSIM. Which means: any code you've bought and haven't redeemed can become a gift, any time.
What can be gifted
- A code you just bought — you had a trip in mind, changed plans, want to hand it off.
- A code you bought months ago and forgot — purchase codes don't expire on their own; sign in at openline.com → My Codes, look for anything unredeemed, and give it away.
- A code someone else bought for you — if you were the recipient, you can pass it on again as long as you haven't redeemed it.
- A code you bought specifically to gift — buy the destination plan, deliver the code however you want.
Once a code has been redeemed on any device, the plan is tied to that device / account and can't be gifted.
How to hand over a code — pick any of these
- Copy from the Openline app — open the app → My Codes → tap the code → Share (sends via any share sheet: message, email, AirDrop, etc.).
- Copy from the web dashboard — sign in at openline.com → My Codes → click the code → Copy or Share link.
- Re-send the original purchase-code email — the email we sent when you bought the plan works fine; forward it to the recipient.
- Get a fresh QR image — from the app or web dashboard, Show QR — save the image and send it as an attachment or print it on a card.
- Get a one-tap install link — for gifts to someone using an iPhone or Android eSIM-capable phone, share the Install link — one tap installs the eSIM directly.
- "Unlock" or transfer the code from your account — sign in → My Codes → tap the code → Unlock from account → the code detaches from your dashboard so the new holder controls it entirely (reinstalls, refunds within window, etc.). Useful when the gift is permanent and you don't want the code to keep showing up under your history.
How the recipient redeems
They have three routes and do not need an Openline account for any of them:
- Anonymous: openline.com/start → paste the code → follow the install flow. No sign-in.
- In the Openline app: they install the app, tap Redeem code, paste, done.
- In their own Openline account (if they have one): sign in → My Codes → Add code.
When does the plan start?
The plan clock only starts the first time the eSIM connects to a partner network at the destination. So:
- Gifting a code doesn't consume anyone's plan window.
- The recipient can install the eSIM at home before travel — it sits dormant.
- The plan begins the moment they turn Data Roaming on abroad.
Gifting scenarios that work well
- Birthdays / graduations / honeymoons — buy a plan for their trip, tuck the code into a card.
- Business travel for a colleague — expense the code, forward the email.
- Family trips — buy one code per traveller in one checkout.
- "Just in case" gifts — buy a small global plan; the recipient uses it whenever they next travel.
- Regifting — got a code you won't use? Pass it on.
Refunds still work if the code isn't a good fit
If the recipient can't use the code (wrong region, incompatible device, whatever), the code is still refundable while unredeemed. Contact ask@openline.com with the code and we'll refund it to the original purchaser's payment method.
